Renamed from Maganoy by virtue of Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 45 on 22 February 1996 after the Muslim preacher Shariff (Arabic شَرِيف (šarīf, “noble”)) Aguak, a “great son” of Shariff Ampatuan who was one of the first people to bring the Islamic faith to the Maguindanao area.
