Ostensibly a corruption of Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“Maḥummad”), ultimately deriving from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (compare Old Catalan Mafumet and Old Galician-Portuguese Mafomat), which would make it a doublet of mammet and Muhammad. Other sources have been suggested.
