From Hindi जटिया (jaṭiyā), a vernacular ethnonym found in North Indian dialects. Some nineteenth- and early twentieth-century ethnographic and linguistic writers proposed that the name may ultimately be connected with earlier forms related to Yadu, a legendary ancestor of the Yadava lineage in ancient Indian tradition.
