Initialism of low-mass X-ray binary: a binary star system that is strong in X-rays, and in which the normal stellar component is a main-sequence star, degenerate dwarf, or evolved star from the main sequence, and the compact X-ray emitting component is a neutron star, black hole, or white dwarf.
