On January 4, 1983, EPA brought papershredders in to destroy "excess copies" of the subpoenaed documents.

On this word, in the eternal race between photocopier and papershredder, the shredder has won out; the ban on its use at the center of power goes beyond "executive privilege" to the depths of primitive taboo.

Think of it like the "memory hole" in George Orwell's 1984, or a wastebasket with a papershredder in it — don't send any information here you expect to retrieve, /dev/null is often used conversationally, as in "Send all complaints to /dev/null."

The basement looked like the aftermath of some monstrous experiment involving rabid squirrels, a papershredder, tequila and cottage cheese. Awful.

It has built into it a papershredder, tape recorder, telephone, TV set to monitor who's at my front and back doors, pencil sharpeners, night light, a radio ... a lot of things.
