Tutbury

释义与例句

name
  1. 1.

A village and civil parish in East Staffordshire district, Staffordshire, England (OS grid ref SK2128).

词源

The second element is from Old English byriġ, dative case of burh (“fort”). The first element comes either from the personal name Tutta, or else from the personal name *Stūt, genitive singular *Stūtes, in which case the initial s- was lost, as similarly happened in the case of Nottingham. However, forms with initial s- are not attested until after the Old English period.
